THERE is a magnetic beauty surrounding Garlieston, the Georgian fishing village tucked away in south-west Scotland.

Edging a sheltered bay, it is a natural haven that feels as if it is miles from the rest of the world.

A beauty spot where you automatically switch into a relaxed frame of mind, this waterside location could well be seen as the perfect spot for an away-from-it-all holiday. In fact, it is more than that.

Thanks to the creative skills of property experts, this picturesque area is winning the attention of househunters seeking a modern home in a scenic setting.

The focus for this interest is the Garlieston Harbour development, which is creating a new future for a historic wharf, granary and listed building with a true picture-postcard outlook.

Gaining a new lease of life as apartments, penthouses, family homes and townhouses, this harbourside development made its market debut earlier this year.

While the interiors of these homes are being created very much for 21st-century living in terms of style, comfort and convenience, the exteriors are carefully reflecting the area's traditional architecture.

Marketing for the development is being handled by agents King Sturge and AB and A Matthews of Newton Stewart.

Roger Smith, managing director of Garlieston Harbour, commented: "In many ways, phase G is the flagship for the development, representing the next stage and signalling its success to date.

"We are also on schedule to welcome our first buyers next month, and to open a showhome in the coming weeks." Although the Garlieston Harbour development has an away-from-it-all atmosphere, its setting on the Machars peninsula between Wigtown and Whithorn is far from isolated. Both the Scottish central belt and the M6 are about two hours away, a benefit that is bringing these homes attention from buyers far and wide as well as locally.
