Mill revamp is true to history

City Lofts, Roberts Wharf, Leeds
Posted: 2007/10/19
A FINE old mill on the River Aire in Leeds city centre has been converted into modern apartments by the City Lofts Group.
And one of the proud new owners in Roberts Wharf is a direct descendant of the company which has given its name to the site.
Roberts Mart & Co Limited was founded in 1852 by William Roberts, a packaging manufacturer. In the 1880s the firm moved into Bank Mills on the Aire, today renamed as and converted into Roberts Wharf.
When the properties went on sale, John Roberts, one of the fifth generation of the family involved in the company, bought the off-plan apartment which he rents to daughter Caroline.
She said: "It's a bit strange knowing a descendant used to own the building - I'm living in my own piece of history. The area is great and living on the fifth floor means I have fantastic views over the river."
Miss Roberts, who works for a charity in Harrogate, is saving up for her own property.
Mr Roberts, who bought the flat several years ago, said the site had been empty since his firm left in 2004 and he was delighted by the regeneration.
He said: "The mill, along with the local area, has been totally transformed and William Roberts would be proud."
City Lofts' Roberts Wharf also includes two new-build blocks providing mixed-use office and residential spaces.
The conversion retains many original features. There is an internal courtyard featuring landscaped gardens and parking spaces are available.
The apartments start at £90,000 for a studio and nine units are still available.
