PLANS have been put forward which, if given the go-ahead, could bring back a residential dimension to the St Andrew Square area of central Edinburgh.

The proposals by the Two Saints Property Company to Edinburgh City Council, are for eight upmarket apartments at North St Andrew Lane off St Andrew Square.

Originally one of the city's prime residential settings, St Andrew Square is nowadays the capital's financial zone.

The focus for these plans is part of a Sixties office building which sits at the back of North St David Street.

The goal is to create contemporary two-bedroom apartments expected to carry price tags of £400,000 to £500,000.

Additional flooring space is being proposed to extend the existing stepped back levels. And a new set-back top floor level is planned to create duplex apartments.

Selling agents Savills are to handle marketing and project management company Golden-Squares will look after developing the venture.

James Little of Golden-Squares said: "The site is ideal for residential development as it's not on the main street, making it less suitable for office or retail use, and is in a quiet but very accessible part of Edinburgh."

He added: "The area has a community which is only operational during business hours. Residential accommodation is highly sought after within Edinburgh and our proposed development will help to sustain the 24-hour life and vibrancy of this part of the city centre."

If these plans gain the green light, the first apartments are expected to be ready for occupation in 2009.

AS housebuilders Gladedale continue with their expansion programme in Scotland, they are now unveiling a new development in Fife.

The £42million project will create 189 homes in Kirkcaldy. To be known as Chapel Level it will include three-, four- and five-bedroom detached homes with the first scheduled to be released for sale next summer.

LENNOX Gate will be the title of the new development being launched by AS Homes in Dumbarton.

It will offer a range of twobedroom apartments, all featuring an excellent specification level which will include an en suite facility for the master bedroom, private parking and a security entry system.

The new properties are expected to make their market debut in February next year, and prices will start at about £120,000.

Another development is due to be launched by AS Homes in Dumbarton. It will feature detached properties.
