THE tenement is as much a part of Glasgow's existence as the River Clyde, and perhaps they are also the forerunners of today's plush inner-city apartment blocks.

But now the elegant splendour of those grand traditional tenements which have become highly sought after, especially in the west end of the city, has gained an ultra modern dimension.

This marriage of past and future living has taken place yards from the west end's main thoroughfare, cosmopolitan Byres Road.

The development carries the straightforward title of 66 Great George Street.

First impression of this corner block is that of a carefully refurbished Victorian tenement, with familiar sash-and-case windows and corner bay windows in evidence.

Yet this is a brand new, 21st century development, skilfully designed to sit comfortable beside its neighbouring Victorian tenements.

Surfacing on what has been a gap site for years, behind the traditionally styled exterior is a dozen high specification homes, a mix of 1 to 3-bedroomed including four duplexes.

Of course, there are no signs of those coal fires or ranges that were in the tenements when they first made their appearance on the landscape.

These luxurious 21st century versions come with features such as combi-boilers and automated central heating.

What is more, bathrooms and shower rooms have underfloor heating.

If more proof is needed of how well these homes have been designed, other luxury touches include a communal satellite TV aerial which can be accessed by all of them.

All have an iPod docking station with integrated speakers for lounge, master bedroom and bathroom.

Integrated appliances in the kitchen include a stainless steel oven, gas hob, glass cooker hood, microwave, washer-dryer, and fridge-freezer - and even a dishwasher.

Mirrors fitted above wash hand basins are heated.

Prices for the apartments start at £175,000 for a one-bedroom version.
