Lochside home shows Art and Craft of good design

Posted: 2009/04/03
DUNBEG House at North Ballachulish, near Fort William, Inverness-shire, seems a magical property.
The home, which is on sale through agents Savills at offers over £750,000, appears to rise from the Loch Leven shoreline.
A Swiss Arts and Craftsstyle home, this three-storey property has an interesting exterior, a rendered brick facade and white painted bargeboarding framing a second-floor window. There is a veranda-style balcony, decorative ironwork arches and a glazed roof.
Dunbeg was built back in 1902 as the dower house for Allschellach House by the Episcopal Bishop of Argyll and the Isles, a fact noted in the staircase, where the newels are in the shape of a bishop's mitre.
A careful restoration and renovation was carried out on Dunbeg House in 1995.
Its main reception rooms and kitchen are on the fi rst floor with four bedrooms on the floor above, plus a dressing room, two bathrooms and a shower room.
What was originally the kitchen at ground-floor level is now a billiard room and still boasts the old range.
This level also houses an office, store rooms and a wine cellar.
The property's 2.5 acres includes some loch shoreline and a private jetty.
